This is my first post and i would enjoy to compose a few sentences regarding hostels. Hostels are a splendid approach to see the world on a budget. From the cheapest to the more grand there is something to accommodate every liking and budget. The important thing regarding hostels is that tons of university students flock to them because they are cheap and joy so there is continuously lots of student travelers around to party with!
In generally every other… Continue

We are only 16 days into 2009 and check out our activity schedule! On Tuesday, at Dario's Tapas social event, I mentioned how stoked I am on the many 'personalities' of SCOA. We are hiking, scuba diving, rock climbing, mountain biking and orienteering - there is a little something for everyone.
The other day someone sent me a list of major retails stores that are closing down due to the ongoing financial crisis. Then today I find out that Alpinist, the glossy climbing magazine, is stopping the presses. Very sad.
The magazine laun… Continue

I'm a casual runner at best, and currently a bit out of shape, but Eric Brooks goaded me into running my first 10k this week. Six of us ran the Chevy Chase Turkey Chase in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thanksgiving morning.
I got smoked by Eric and Jimmy Blakeney -- both members of StrayRocket. They came in in the low 40s. I ran it in just over 50 min… Continue
You may have noticed StrayRocket has a new look. I cleaned up the design a bit to make it easier for members to customize their profiles - and to simplify the home page. Also, I wanted to be able to highlight some of the great photos and videos people have submitted, and the new top… Continue

I'm new to this whole StrayRocket thing...I know, kinda cliche, right? Anyways, one of my Facebook friends and co-founder of Stray Rocket got me started on this. Didn't really talk to him, just found this link and decided to join. Anyways, I guess this should more appropriately be a short bio, but you can decide for yourself.
I am 19 years old, (20 on November 3) and have been participating in outdoor activities since I was 6 months, yes MONTHS, old. That leaves me with 19 1/2 yrs of outdoor ex… Continue

So the link between boating and climate protection is pretty easy -- shorter winters = less winter snowpack = less western water in the summer. Yeah, I know that there was plenty of snowpack this year, but the overall climate trend isn't looking so great at the moment.
The same thing plays out for ice climbing in a pretty obvious manner. what's less obvious is that if there are hotter, drier summers and more fires, pretty much every other outdoor pursuit gets screwed too (mountain biking, rock… Continue

Lot's of things can ruin a surf competition. Wind. Lack of waves. Sharks. But here's a new one: an abandoned ship, missing crew and captain amid suspicions of mutiny and murder, that runs aground in the middle of the surf break.
That's what happened during the Indonesian surfing cha… Continue
Surfers on the East Coast of the United States are waxing their boards in anticipation of an early season hurricane headed West across the Atlantic. National Weather Service upgraded Tropical storm Bertha to Category 1 hurricane status this morning.

I usually have one of two reactions when I'm stuck in a big river hole while kayaking, or crash when snowboarding, or peel off a rock face: panic or laughter.
Either I fear for life and limb or I find the situation thoroughly amusing. The panic part makes sense. But laughter?… Continue
